Tryon, Landrum, and Saluda
Known as the “String of Pearls” the three towns of Tryon, Landrum, and Saluda constitute one of the loveliest stretches of highway in the region. Although the highway drive is highly recommended, it would be shame to not stop along the way to sample what each of these distinct towns has to offer. Landrum, SC, presents all the quaint charm one would expect to find in a small Southern town, and be sure to stop for lunch at Twigs to discover just how sophisticated small town living can be. The Red Horse Inn would be glad to play host for the night, giving you a night of luxury alongside the gently rolling foothills and pastoral countryside.
Just to the north of Landrum awaits the charming yet sophisticated village of Tryon, N.C. Once the resort destination of the Gilded Age, Tryon has retained its regal air of old world aristocracy, and is home to a vibrant equestrian community. Be sure to take in this horse country, as well as one of the tremendously exciting race days at FENCE (Federation Equestrian Nature Center), site of the Blockhouse Steeplechase every April. For an evening of relaxation in a beautiful country setting, stay at Tryon’s Pine Crest Inn and enjoy a 5-star gourmet meal prepared by the executive chef in the Inn’s award winning restaurant.
Saluda sits at the highest point of these three sister towns, and resides in arguably the most beautiful location. A mountain town surrounded by locomotive-driven history, take the time to stroll down Saluda‘s Main Street , where time has not quite stopped, but has definitely slowed down. I recommend lunch at the Purple Onion, or why not browse M.A. Pace’s General Store and meet the proprietor, son of the original owner. Stay the night at The Oaks, a Victorian home that defines what a bed and breakfast should be. Before you go, make sure to see the natural beauty that surrounds you with a drive down the rhodedendron-lined Greenville Watershed and a visit to Bradley Falls.
