Sassafras Mountain Overlook

Too often, although understandably, the most stunning mountain vistas require a grueling trek. Even though gorgeous mountain views are worth the work, it is nice to have a reprieve and take a short walk to enjoy our local stunning landscapes.
Once such location is the Sassafras Mountain overlook in Pickens County. Although this mountain marks the highest point in all of South Carolina, you can easier access the view from this summit by either the paved (yes, steep) walk up or via the handicap accessible trail that leads to a ramp for the new overlook.
Just this year, the new overlook was completed and what a spectacular site awaits. From here, and with an elevation of 3,553’, you can view four states – South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee on a clear day!
To reach this scenic destination, head toward the Rocky Bottom community on US 178. Turn right on F. Van Clayton Memorial Highway and go just under 5 miles for the parking area, with restroom facilities available as well.
