Scenic Mountain Drives

As beautiful as this area is, we acknowledge that some of our Summer days can be rather warm. But that does not mean you can’t enjoy the stunning area! There are many drives that afford the compelling vistas with the luxury of your vehicle’s air conditioning (with a stop or two to stretch the legs at some well-places scenic overlooks).

Of course, the Blue Ridge Parkway is first to mind as far a scenic roads in the entire United States goes! From Asheville, North Carolina, you can drive north or south on this parkway to ascend and enjoy the elevation. If needing a speedy return, there are many places to exit the parkway and return via a highway.

For 50+ miles of peaks and valleys of Madison and Yancey counties, consider driving the Mt. Mitchell Scenic Byway. This takes you through the Toe River Valley and the small town of Burnsville, North Carolina.

How about viewing some waterfalls on your journey? You can drive the 98 miles through the Blue Ridge Mountains on U.S. Highway 64 which takes you by several stunning waterfalls and charming towns. As you enter the Cullasaja River Gorge, you may stop by the roadside waterfalls of Dry Falls and Bridal Veil!

Newfound Gap Road is another popular driving location which takes you through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Along the way, you have the Oconalufee Visitor Center, the Mountain Farm Museum, and more along this 3,000 foot climb to the Tennessee border.

Last on our list but certainly not least is the Forest Heritage National Scenic Byway, another nationally-recognized drive that offers beautiful views. This winding route crosses the Blue Ridge Parkway twice and is also named the Copperhead Loop by motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoy the many twists and curves along the way.

Regardless of what road you travel, enjoy your Summer days.
